Homeowners across Oregon are being reminded to create defensible space to help protect their homes and property against wildfire.  The Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office held a demonstration burn showing when houses catch fire, flames spread fast.

"Now that we have structures involved, the rest of the neighborhood has a completely game changing-level of threat to it."

Roy Wright, with the Institute for Business & Home Safety, said most homeowners don't take the necessary steps.

"Most homeowners just hope and pray wildfire won't get to them," he noted.  "We want to provide a science based pathway to narrow those paths."

During the demonstration burn, a house with concrete pavers around it was spared, it also had no bushes or trees next to it.  Aluminum gutters and vent mesh screens also help keep embers from starting a fire.
