China Could Fill U.S. Void

China is likely to fill the trade vacuum in Asia and the Pacific if the U.S. fails to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal. Beijing is already negotiating its own 16-nation trade pact.  It’s not a question of if, or even when, China will lead other Asian-Pacific trading nations away from the U.S. and into their own economic and political sphere.  American Farm Bureau Trade Advisor, Dave Salmonsen said they’re doing it right now.

“The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership called the R-cep has been going on for the last couple of years.  Not as comprehensive as the TPP but, includes a lot of the same nations in the Asia Pacific region that TPP does but of course, the centerpiece of it would be china.”

President Obama’s TPP deal is central to his economic, political, and military rebalance to the Pacific, to keep Asian allies from falling under China’s influence.  Salmonsen said while both presidential candidates are opposed to TPP, he’s confident if a few key stumbling blocks can we worked out, the trade deal can be ratified before January 20^th.
