Brazil Re-opens Market to U.S. Beef
The USDA announced a new agreement with Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply that will allow U.S. beef and beef products back in the country.
The move came in part because the U.S. were classified as negligible risk relating to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) by the World Organization for Animal Health.
Secretary Tom Vilsack said he was pleased at the move noting, “The Brazilian market offers excellent long-term potential for U.S. beef exporters. The United States looks forward to providing Brazil's 200-million-plus consumers.”
In a separate move, the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service determined that Brazil’s food safety program is equivalent to USDA’s program and food can be safely imported.
