The American Farm Bureau Federation filed a friend of the court brief last week asking the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a case against online retailers who don’t collect sales taxes.

The state of South Dakota is filing suit versus Wayfair, Overstock and NewEgg over their failures to collect the sales taxes for online purchases.

In a letter to the court, the Farm Bureau said that when family-owned stores are forced to close, it hurts rural communities and could result in fewer public services.

The letter said, “The departure of a local general store can leave a rural town with no grocery or pharmacy within a 50-mile radius. This is not uncommon.”
