The USDA is recognizing April as "Winning on Reducing Food Waste" month.

"This is a big deal, first of all, because there is so much of it. I think most people are shocked when they hear that loss and food-loss in waste accounts for over one-third of our available food supply," said USDA's Elise Golan.  She added the Economic Research Service estimates that an average family of four wastes roughly $1,500 of food a year.

"So, think about it, if you are a big family and every week or every other week you went to the grocery store and bought five big bags of groceries, that's equivalent to throwing away, essentially, one of those bags away every time you go shopping."

Golan said they've partnered with EPA and FDA to highlight the problem.

"Coming together, we can just really amplify that message, and make sure we are not duplicated our efforts, and that we really are communicating to the American public that this is an important issue."
