A spring frost cut the Northwest's 2026 cherry harvest short, but the fruit that made it to market turned heads for all the right reasons.

This year's Rainier cherry harvest came in around 1.1 million boxes — about half of last year's total — after spring storms knocked back what's usually one of the season's most popular crops.

Pacific Northwest cherry growers needed a strong 2026 season to get back on solid footing. So far, prices remain below what many need to break even, and some acreage near The Dalles has been abandoned entirely.

The cherry harvest is booming in the Northwest, with growers shipping over 5.5 million boxes, just in time for July 4th celebrations and the upcoming National Rainier Cherry Day.
