A big part of risk management for producers is crop insurance, but it’s not the only part.

Jim Slama of FamilyFarmed said for farmers who are selling through the farmers market and other direct marketing, there’s more.

“It almost always includes food safety because food safety is one of the biggest risks that both farmers and buyers face.”

That risk management strategy includes a food safety plan that can help with accountability and traceability, something Slama said is critical.

“If there is a food safety outbreak, there needs to be identifications on the boxes that it came from [a certain] farm and in some cases they even want to know what field so they can track back who else might have got that produce.”

Another part of risk management is education on food safety regulations.
