Do you have clay soil and you don’t think anything can grow there? An Oregon State University Soil Expert says it is possible but it won’t be easy.

James Cassidy said the some of the bigger problems revolve around water in clay soils which drops soil temperature, but also water retention and adhesive properties.

“But there is a very, very high fertility in clay soils.”

Which means clay is amongst the best soil types for nutrient storage.

What do you need to do to grow in clay soil? Cassidy said it’s about adding other materials.

“Add organic matter and compost and cover crops, things like that can help even a clay soil be a more well-drained soil which is important.”

Cassidy also noted that with little to no tillage and that organic matter, clay soils can be much healthier and more pliable for crops in about five years.
